Why Medical-Grade Skincare Is Different From What You Buy at the Mall

Patients often ask why they should buy skincare from us when the shelf at the department store has products with the same ingredients listed. It is a fair question, and the answer is more specific than "ours is better".

Concentration

Retail skincare is formulated to be safe for anyone who picks it up without guidance. That means active ingredients appear at conservative concentrations.

Professional lines are formulated for use under the direction of someone who assessed your skin first. The actives are present at levels that produce measurable change, which is also why they need that guidance.

Formulation and delivery

An ingredient list tells you what is in a bottle, not whether it can reach the part of your skin where it works.

Plenty of retail products contain vitamin C in a form that oxidises before it does anything useful. Professional formulations invest heavily in stability and delivery. That is invisible on the label and it is most of what you are paying for.

Evidence

The lines we carry publish clinical studies on their finished formulations, not just on individual ingredients. That distinction matters. An ingredient performing well in a laboratory says little about how a particular product performs on a face.

What we carry, and why only two

Skinbetter Science and Hydrinity. Two lines, not a wall of products.

Michelle tested both personally before we brought either into the studio, and uses them herself. We would rather offer two lines we can speak about honestly than twenty we cannot.

Where retail is genuinely fine

We are not going to pretend otherwise. Cleansers, basic moisturisers and body products from the drugstore are often perfectly good, and spending heavily on them is not a good use of your money.

Where professional formulation earns its price is in the actives: retinoids, antioxidants, pigment correctors, growth factors. That is where concentration, stability and delivery decide whether anything changes.

The honest recommendation

Come in for a skin assessment. We will look at your skin, ask what you are already using, and tell you which of your current products are working. If your drugstore moisturiser is doing its job, we will say so.

Then we will recommend the two or three things that would actually make a difference, rather than a full routine you will abandon in a month.
